Signs Your Copperfield Crown Repair Is Failing

• Hairline cracks running from flue edge to crown rim. These form when the concrete crown and clay flue expand at different rates during Wakefield’s freeze-thaw cycles. Water enters, freezes, and widens the crack. By spring it’s a channel, not a seam.

Here’s where DIY goes wrong: crown work happens at height, on a roof surface that’s steeper than it looks from the yard. The sealants that actually last are professional-grade elastomerics or formed concrete, not hardware-store caulk that cracks by November. And diagnosing whether the flue tile beneath the crown is also compromised requires a camera down the flue. We’ve replaced crowns only to find the real leak was a cracked flue liner three feet down.
